Record fuel prices looming for October as Brent nears $110

South African motorists face the prospect of record pump prices in October, according to an early Central Energy Fund (CEF) snapshot. Preliminary indications suggest 93 unleaded petrol could rise by about R2.02 a litre and 95 unleaded by roughly R2.14, while diesel grades may climb between R1.71 and R2.05.

Brent crude was trading near $110 a barrel late last week after breaking through $100 earlier, and further oil-price moves could still shift the final numbers before month-end. On current estimates, 95 unleaded could reach about R28.19 a litre at the coast and R29.06 in Gauteng — levels not previously seen.

Wholesale 50ppm diesel in Gauteng could also eclipse the May record of R31.38, with projections around R31.60. Combined with September's already steep increases, a typical petrol fill-up could cost well over a hundred rand more than before that hike, adding fresh pressure on private motorists and minibus-taxi operators alike.
