Mbalula hits back as ANC battles candidate-list fallout

African National Congress secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has pushed back against National Executive Committee member Andile Lungisa's decision to challenge his exclusion from the party's election candidate list in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

Mbalula suggested Lungisa should have raised concerns directly rather than through lawyers, as the organisation grapples with wider candidate-list turbulence ahead of the November local polls. The ANC is also locked in a dispute with the Electoral Commission over late or missing candidates in some municipalities, with reports that certain mayoral hopefuls were omitted from submitted lists.

The dual controversies — internal court challenges and IEC friction — risk further disruption to the party's already troubled campaign start, as metros prepare for highly contested ballots.
